Free browser strategy · ancient Rome

One town to start. Build it up, arm it, grow it into a province.

Unimperium is a city-building strategy game you play in the browser. Your town produces around the clock, even while you are away. Spend what it makes on new works, trade what you have too much of, raise legions, and take the towns of Latium one by one.

The game loop

  1. I

    Produce

Lumber camps, quarries and iron mines fill the warehouse around the clock, and living quarters grow the people every work and recruit draws on.

  2. II

    Build

Order upgrades in the Curia. The cost is paid up front, the work joins the build queue, and each level takes longer than the last.

  3. III

    Trade

A town with a market swaps 2 of one good for 1 of another, delivered half an hour later. Short of iron? Pay in timber, and plan ahead.

  4. IV

    Conquer

Drill troops in the Castra, put a consul at their head and march. One won battle annexes the town, buildings and all.

The windows you play in

The town view: a Roman town on an isometric map, each building labelled with its level

Town

Your town, building by building

Every building stands on the map with its level over its roof. It is where you check on a city and open the window that runs each building.

The Curia window, listing each building with its level, upgrade cost and build time

Curia

City works

Every building in the town on one list, with what the next level costs and how long it takes. The Curia also trains the consuls your armies march under.

The Castra window, with the garrison of a town and the troops it can train

Castra

Garrison and drill

Velites and equites first; legionaries, ballistae, scouts and spies once the town’s collegium has studied them. Recruits drill one at a time.

The Campaign window, with the map of Latium, a target town and the standings of the empires

Campaign

The map of Latium

Every town on the map, whose it is and what you know of its garrison. Pick a target, weigh the odds and send an army; the standings sit underneath.

The codex

Every number, tab by tab

Behind the windows

Always running

Your town works while you are away

Production, building and training run on the world’s clock, so an empire keeps working with the tab closed, and armies arrive and fight on time even when every player is offline.

Tabularium

A record of your reign

Every finished work, advance, recruit and march is filed in the Tabularium, and every battle gets a war report dated in years AUC, so you can read what happened while you were gone.

Roads

Move men and goods between your towns

Troops belong to the town that drilled them. Send a column down the road to gather an army where you need it; it needs no consul. A market sends wagons of goods the same way.

Fog of war

Nobody sees everything

A rival’s garrison is known only as it was when your spies last looked, and a defender sees an attack coming but never its size.

Frequently asked

Do I need to download anything?

No. Unimperium runs in the browser, so there is no client, launcher or app store. Sign in on another device and your empire is there.

Is it free to play?

Yes. Every building, troop and advance is free, and nothing is sold that makes an empire stronger. Renting a private world is the only thing in the store.

Can I play without an account?

Yes. Continue as a guest and you get a solo world: your own town and 11 neutral towns to take, with no rivals. A guest game is tied to the browser it was started in, so create an account to keep it.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Public worlds put several players on one map. To play only with people you know, rent a private world for up to 9 players and invite them by code or by username.

Play a public world, a solo one, or rent your own.

A guest can start a solo world with no sign-up. Private worlds let you set the march speed and choose who gets in.
